Matthew Norman - 9/10

Monday, August 08, 2011 - The perfection continued with three of the four main courses. Frances's 21-day aged Hereford sirloin steak came precisely medium rare as ordered, with fat chips and a deep orange-yoked duck egg. The boy's confit of duck was correctly crispy-skinned (nothing worse than a flaccid duck), and juicy and flavoursome within. My herb-crusted cannon of spring lamb, properly pink and served with a 'nicoise garnish' of beans and black olives, was spectacular, and the attention to detail (tiny, lightly pickled onions embedded among the beans) as winsome as the presentation.

Have had 2 meals here, lunch and a dinner a few weeks later.

The place is welcoming and inviting, and the owner and his son who are very present really know what they are doing. There is a very nice selection of local beers and real ciders on tap. These are worth trying, and sipping a pint with some home-made pork scratchings while sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the wonderful countryside must be one of the most calming and enjoyable experiences in this area.

The food is ambitious, and well above "pub-grub".Everything is made fresh on the premises .Even the chips are hand cut and not previously frozen.Starters include home made pressed oxtail with foie gras which was delicious, as well as fresh local scallops with a mint and pea sauce.Bread is also home made and the variety on offer is great. I am not so sure that serving the bread with pressed sunflower oil is a good idea. While this may be in keeping with the everything local theme, the taste is not very nice and not a patch on extra virgin olive oil.

Main courses include wonderful canon of local lamb, as well as roasted local duck etc all served with freshly made local seasonal vegetables- no frozen veg here. The desserts are probably the weak point of the menu-chocolate millefeuille with mascarpone sorbet was some puff pastry with a layer of milk chocolate mousse and a dollop of slightly sour watery mascarpone. These did not go well at all, so I would not rush to order a dessert here.

The wine list is interesting with unusual bottles.

The peaceful location and ambitious food is worth supporting, as it was clear that many locals seemed to be more interested in the fish and chips and burgers.
